Political elite discourses polarize attitudes toward immigration along ideological lines. A comparative longitudinal analysis of Europe in the twenty-first century

Immigration is a hotly-debated topic in many countries around the world. We examine how immigration-related political elite discourses affect natives’ attitudes towards immigration and these contribute to polarisation along socio-economic dimensions. Drawing upon longitudinal cross-national data from European Social Survey over 18 years genuine within-country estimator for both country-level main effects cross-level interactions, our results show that, controlling actual immigration, anti-immigrant increase when elites express more exclusionary sentiments decrease inclusionary sentiments. Deeper analyses reveal primarily resonate with voters on right, whereas of do not vary orientation. find any attitude between lower- highly-educated individuals. In sum, indicate that ideological discursive aspects inter-group conflict are important than real-world conditions.
